Job Summary and Qualifications

The Lactation Consultant provides lactation support services and clinical management for breastfeeding mother/infants, in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, families and significant others.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Decisions and actions delineated by their professional certification to include assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation of the breastfeeding mother and infant(s). 
  • Responsibilities also include identification/prevention of breastfeeding problems, complete accurate and timely documentation of care and communication with all involved in mother/infant(s) care. 
  • The Lactation Consultant role reflects knowledge of educational updates, new technology and research studies consistent with the International Lactation Consultant Association

What qualifications you will need:

  • Must be a graduate from an accredited nursing program. Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred. 
  • Licensed as a registered professional nurse in the state(s) of practice and/or has an active compact license, in accordance with law and regulation. 
  • BCLS required. If not currently an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), must obtain within 2 years. If preparing for testing to become IBCLC, current registry in good standing with at least one of the following credentialing agencies is required
    • Certified Breastfeeding Specialist (Lactation Education Resources), 
    • Certified Breastfeeding Educator (Lactation Consultant Services), 
  • A minimum of 3 years clinical experience in maternal/neonatal nursing
