Job Description

Community Service Officer – USC Department of Public Safety Location: Los Angeles, CA – University Park Campus. Full‑time. Job Summary : The USC Department of Public Safety (DPS) seeks a Community Service Officer to support campus safety through patrol duties, access control, monitoring of electronic door systems and CCTV, assisting with investigations, and perimeter and parking lot security. This is an unarmed position working under the direct supervision of a Community Service Officer II or a Sergeant. Responsibilities Patrol an assigned area, performing prescribed security checks of buildings, offices, and grounds to prevent loss of university assets. Open and secure buildings and rooms according to procedures, operating or monitoring electronic door access, CCTV systems, and other security devices. Dispatch or coordinate responses to situations identified through observations on CCTV and electronic door access. Maintain logs and records required to indicate duty times, occurrences, actions taken, observations made, and other relevant information; submit reports as required. Implement department procedures governing apprehensions, interrogations, and disposition of cases. Assist with parking control and vehicle/pedestrian security; direct traffic and give directions. Assist in maintaining perimeter and crowd control during crimes, emergencies, and special activities. Escort university and hospital employees, students, and patients between facilities and their vehicles. Assist in crime prevention and public information programs. Implement and enforce OSHA, CAL-OSHA, and university policies relating to safety, health, and fire prevention. Serve as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) and mandatory reporter under the Clery Act; receive reports of crimes or criminal incidents and notify the Department of Public Safety and the Clery Compliance Coordinator. Qualifications Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Experience: 0–6 months. Valid California Class C driver’s license for at least two years and a valid State of California Department of Consumer Affairs Guard Card. Work Schedule The regularly assigned work schedule is a 4/10 alternative schedule—10 hours per day, 40 hours per week. Shifts include holidays, weekends, overtime, special events, and emergencies. Compensation The hourly rate for this position is $21.00.
